Over the last couple of years we've had a fair bit to say about Infinity Motorcycles and their phoenix-like rise from the ashes of Motorcycle City and Carnells. And it's been good, but it's been about them as a business rather than anything else.

Now a couple of their directors - Rob Puttick and Dave Holloway - are (and some might say this is very unusual) doing something truly worthwhile. We've just about all lost someone we know to cancer, and when Rob's sister sadly lost her fight against the disease last year he decided to do something more active than just wringing his hands and wishing he could help. There is research being done to beat this disease that kills more of us each year than all the diesel spills and blind motorists added together, but research needs funding.

So he decided to go generate some.

Now some people hold boot sales or do sponsored walks. Rob and Dave are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. They're paying for the whole trip themselves, so any sponsorship is going straight to the charities and not covering costs. They're both in their forties and, I think it's fair to say, show some evidence of having enjoyed life. Which is fair enough, but it does mean that this expedition is going to be hard work.

It's far, far bigger in real life...Image provided courtesy of Jungle Photos (www.junglephotos.com)
I'll let Rob fill in the details:

"All you need to know about Kilimanjaro:
• Kilimanjaro is 5,895 m (19,340 ft) high compared to Snowdon’s paltry 1,064 m (3,560 ft).

• Acute Moutain Sickness (AMS) affects over 75% of climbers at this altitude

• It’s the highest free-standing mountain in the world - a colossal volcano cone.

• As well as being a gruelling climb, oxygen levels will be just 50% of those at sea level.

• We have already begun a demanding training program that will take in Snowdon, Mont Blanc and the Brecon Beacons. I’m sure you’ll have noticed how trim and athletic we’ve become.

• Dave has promised to keep an expedition photo diary of his blisters progress. You should see the blisters he got as a result of a vigorous dog walk in his new climbing boots.

"So, you might well ask, why on earth are we doing it?
There are two reasons. It’s a life goal for both of us and more importantly its a fantastic opportunity to help two great charities. We have chosen these charities due to the sad loss of Stella Wilkie (Rob’s sister) to breast cancer last year. We are funding the trip out of our own pockets so all donations will go straight to the charities (so please don’t wait for us to complete the trip).

The Genesis Appeal

Breast cancer can be stopped. You can help. The Genesis Appeal is dedicated to building Europe’s first purpose-built breast cancer prevention centre here in the UK - and stopping this disease before it starts. It already has the expertise, now all it needs is the money.

Marie Curie Cancer Care

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing totally free, to give terminally ill people the choice of dying
at home supported by their families. Your local Marie Curie Hospice actively promotes quality of life for people with
cancer and provides support for their families. The services are completely free to patients. World class scientists at the Marie Curie Research Institute are investigating how cancer develops to find better ways of treating the disease in the future.

If you want to donate, this is how you do it:

1 Visit www.justgiving.com, click on ‘UK site’.
2 Click ‘Sponsor a Friend’.
3 Enter name to sponsor: ‘Rob Puttick’ for The Genesis Appeal or ‘Dave Holloway’ for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
4 Click ‘Sponsor me now’ and follow the instructions for credit card donations.

"If you know anyone else who may be willing to donate, please ask them to visit our Just Giving webpages - it’s a secure, and even better, tax efficient way to help these wonderful charities. By doin it this way you can be sure that your money goes directly to our good causes and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% will be added to your gift at no cost by the government through Giftaid.

Many thanks for your support.

Rob and Dave"

We will be running updates as and when we get them, but please, if you feel able then do support these two guys trying to do something good.
