Fancy meeting some Superbike heroes? And hearing one of the best live bands around? And raising money for a really good cause as well? Then read on.
You've probably encountered the Chris Jones Rider's Fund by now. Set up in memorium of young Chris Jones, surprisingly enough, the fund has achieved a huge amount already. Chris was one of the most promising young up and coming riders in the country when he was killed in a bizarre startline pileup at Cadwell Park. Rather than turning their back on the sport, which would have been understandable, his family concentrated in trying to make things better. And so the fund was started.
The first target was to buy a mobile imaging (X-Ray) machine that could be used at race meetings anywhere in the country. This single piece of kit, which is a genuine lifesaver, cost a staggering £100,000. The fund raised this money in under a year through auctions, events and donations. The biggest donors were the riders who gave their time, support and enthusiasm again and again. And day to day the biggest winners were you, the fans, who got memorabilia, entertainment and other experiences that would otherwise just never have been possible.
So with the portable imaging unit bought and handed over, what came next? Getting Air Ambulance coverage at every UK race meeting, that's what. It's an ambitious goal, but if it can be achieved then it genuinely will save lives. Regularly.
So in the spirit of this, we're delighted to publicise a gig being organised by a good friend of ours just into the New Year. Shanna White has managed to persuade Crash! World Superbikes Champion James Toseland's band, to perform a one off show in Doncaster. James has one hell of a schedule this year, and it's quite possible that this will be just about the only time you'll be able to see and hear him perform before the end of the season. Now as a cynical, jaded old hack I have to be honest and say that Crash! truly are one of the best live acts I've seen. And I've seen quite a few. They play well, they choose great numbers and they clearly have a blast. As do the audience.
It's a steal at just a tenner a ticket, so put it in your diaries and get yourselves there.
Because of the staggering response Shanna has had, the gig is still at 7:30 on 6th January 2008, but the venue has changed to Moods Nightclub, Priory Walk, Doncaster.
You can get tickets by e-mailing Shanna via this address. Well, we're hardly going to publish her address and phone number, are we?
Do it. You won't be sorry. And we'll see you there. Come find us and I might even buy you a pint!
SB
PS If you like the picture at the top then you could get a unique print of it, presented at the gig. Who knows, maybe James could sign it for you, too. Shanna will give me a name at random from people who have bought tickets through here and that person wins. No cost, no catch...
